About the Painting
This stunning blue jay is juxtaposed against crimson autumnal foliage. We often see blue jays on their own, but in many cases they are temporary lone explorers, taking a curious deviation from their flock. Their flocks prefer to travel with the sun in groups ranging from 5 to 50 birds. The next time you see a blue jay hopping about, remember that there are many more nearby, waiting. Spotting a flock of blue jays is a unique sight, and one you won’t forget. Ruby toned iron oxide pigments of red, orange and yellow add depth to the dense background. The blue jay is painted in layers of primary cyan, light phthalo blue and titan creams.
